FIA Formula E and Kunak: an alliance for clean air at the Berlin E-Prix

Kunak partnered with Formula E to install a series of sensors throughout the event to provide a detailed insight into air quality to provide live data to fans on-site and via the app.

Need

Fórmula E is the world championship of electric car racing that promotes sustainable mobility and care for the environment. As part of its commitment to air quality, Formula E partnered with Kunak, a leading Spanish company in environmental monitoring solutions, to measure pollution levels in the cities where the races are held. The aim was to understand the impact of electric mobility in reducing emissions and to raise awareness of the importance of breathing clean air.

Solution

Kunak provided Formula E with a network of Kunak AIR Pro air quality monitoring stations installed at strategic locations in the host cities. These stations measure pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and particulate matter in real-time. The collected data were sent to a web platform, Kunak AIR Cloud, where they could be visualised and analysed in a simple and accessible way. Additionally, the data was integrated with the Formula E timing and telemetry system, allowing air quality information to be displayed on screens and social media during the races.

Thanks to Kunak’s solution, Formula E obtained reliable and accurate data on air quality in the cities where the races took place, allowing it to assess the positive impact of electric mobility on improving air quality. Formula E disseminated this data through its communication channels, raising environmental awareness and education among spectators and the general public. Finally, Formula E reinforced its image as an organisation committed to sustainability and innovation, aligned with the values of its partners and sponsors.

Results

The obtained data from the stations showed a significant reduction in pollution levels in the cities where the races were held, compared to the days before and after the event. For example, in Santiago de Chile, a 40% decrease in nitrogen dioxide and a 20% decrease in particulate matter was recorded during the race. In addition, Kunak’s solution was recognised by several international organisations, such as the UN and WHO, who highlighted the value of the initiative in promoting International Clean Air Blue Sky Day.

Benefits:

  • The positive impact of electric mobility on improving air quality was demonstrated by observing a significant reduction in pollution levels in the cities where the races were held.
  • Dissemination of air quality data through communication channels, which contributed to raising awareness and environmental education among spectators and the general public.
  • Reinforcement of Formula E’s image as an organisation committed to sustainability and innovation, aligned with the values of its partners and sponsors.
  • Recognition from several international organisations, such as the UN and WHO, highlighting the value of the initiative to promote International Clean Air Day for a Blue Sky.
